Nestled in the heart of the Banaras Hindu University, the New Vishwanath Temple (VT) stands as a symbol of modern Hindu architectural resurgence. The foundation stone was laid in March 1931 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, and the construction was completed in 1966 by the Birla Group of Industries. Spread over a vast area, the temple welcomes people of all castes, creeds, and religions, reflecting Malaviya Ji’s vision of inclusive spirituality.

The temple complex is unique because it is a multi-shrine structure built on two floors. The ground floor houses the central sanctum with a beautiful sacred Shiva Lingam made of black stone. The surrounding walls of the temple hall are made of pristine marble and are intricately engraved with verses from the Bhagavad Gita, the Vedas, and ancient Upanishads. The upper floor houses shrines dedicated to other major Hindu deities. Surrounded by manicured green lawns and dynamic fountains, VT serves as a peaceful retreat for both devout pilgrims and university students.

History & Significance

The history of the New Vishwanath Temple is deeply tied to the vision of creating a center where education and spiritual values coexist. Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya wanted a grand temple within the university campus to inspire the youth. Realizing the frequent destruction and historical challenges faced by the old Kashi Vishwanath Temple in the main city, industrialist Jugal Kishore Birla stepped forward to fund this massive project to preserve and celebrate Sanatan Dharma.

The architectural significance of VT is globally renowned. Its majestic spire (Shikhara) rises to a towering height of approximately 252 feet (77 meters), making it the tallest temple tower in the world. The design incorporates elements from various traditional Indian temple architectural styles, showcasing a seamless blend of heritage and engineering.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit is from October to March when the weather is cool and perfect for exploring the sprawling BHU campus. For a spiritual highlight, visiting during Maha Shivratri is highly recommended, as the temple is beautifully decorated and hosts a massive fair (Mela). Visiting during the evening hours is also wonderful to experience the peaceful campus atmosphere and the evening Aarti.
